A Kansas City man has been sentenced to 51 months in federal prison without parole for illegally possessing a firearm. Michael A. Winchester, 22, received the sentence from U.S. Chief District Court Judge Brian C. Wimes after pleading guilty to being a felon in possession of a Ruger, 5.7 caliber handgun.
According to court documents, the incident occurred on April 3, 2025, when officers from the Independence Police Department heard gunshots near E. Wilson Rd. and S. Brookside Ave. Officers responded and saw a silver Dodge Caravan with plates registered to another vehicle. When they attempted to stop the car, Winchester fled at speeds up to 107 mph before stopping westbound on E. U.S. 24 just west of Paseo Blvd.
Winchester had two passengers in his vehicle at the time of the chase. Police conducted an inventory search and found the Ruger handgun and an expended shell casing under the driver’s gas pedal. Officers determined that Winchester had a prior felony conviction and arrested him.
