A Kansas City man has been sentenced to nearly four years in federal prison for illegally possessing a firearm after a previous felony conviction.
James Arthur Tatum, 35, received a sentence of 46 months in prison from U.S. District Judge Roseann A. Ketchmark. The sentence also includes three years of supervised release following his incarceration.
According to court documents, Tatum was stopped by an officer from the Columbia, Missouri Police Department on June 8, 2024. While the officer checked Tatum’s identification, he noticed movements in the front passenger area that raised suspicion. A search of the vehicle led officers to find a Glock 43X handgun under the driver’s seat. Because of prior felony convictions, including a previous federal conviction, Tatum is prohibited from owning or possessing firearms.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Lauren E. Kummerer and investigated by both the Columbia Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
