A Kansas City, Missouri man was sentenced on April 8 to nine years in federal prison without parole for illegally possessing a firearm. Jermaine J. Arrington, 42, received the sentence in United States District Court after being found guilty of being a felon in possession of a Smith & Wesson 9mm semi-automatic pistol.

Arrington’s sentencing comes after an incident on May 20, 2025, when officers responded to an armed disturbance with shots fired at 31st and Prospect Avenue in Kansas City. According to court documents, Arrington attempted to flee from police and discarded a loaded handgun during the chase. Officers later recovered the firearm, which had been reported stolen from Olathe, Kansas in 2023. They also found approximately two grams of methamphetamine in his pocket at the time of arrest.

Arrington has six prior felony convictions before this latest offense. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Brad K. Kavanaugh and investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives along with the Kansas City Police Department.

This prosecution is part of Operation Take Back America—a nationwide initiative led by the Department of Justice that aims to combat illegal immigration and eliminate cartels and transnational criminal organizations while protecting communities from violent crime perpetrators.
