A man from Marshall, Missouri, has pleaded guilty in federal court to charges related to drugs and firearms following a May 2025 incident during which two Pettis County deputies were injured.

James Joseph Elsea, 62, entered his plea before Chief U.S. Magistrate Judge Willie J. Epps, Jr. He admitted to possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, discharging and possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, and possessing firearms after a prior felony conviction.

According to the plea agreement filed after the hearing, Elsea acknowledged that on May 2, 2025, while Pettis County Sheriff’s Office deputies were executing a no-knock search warrant at his home, he fired shots from inside the residence that struck and injured two deputies. About nine minutes later, Elsea called 911 to report he believed he had shot someone. After his arrest and law enforcement’s entry into his home, officers found evidence that methamphetamine had been discarded down the toilet. Loose methamphetamine was also found on the bathroom floor, around and under the toilet, on the seat, and in the bowl. Firearms were discovered inside the house as well. Elsea has previous felony convictions that prohibit him from possessing firearms.

Federal law provides for up to 20 years in prison for possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and up to 15 years for being a felon in possession of a firearm. The charge of possessing and discharging a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years consecutive to any other penalty imposed in this case. The final sentence will be determined by the court based on advisory guidelines after completion of a presentence investigation by the United States Probation Office.

The case is prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Lauren E. Kummerer following an investigation by the Pettis County Sheriff’s Office, Missouri State Highway Patrol, and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

The prosecution is part of Operation Take Back America—a national initiative led by the Department of Justice aimed at combating illegal immigration, dismantling cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), and addressing violent crime across communities.
