A Romanian national has pleaded guilty to a series of wire frauds targeting Walmart stores across the United States. Suras Rostas, 21, admitted in U.S. District Court in St. Louis to conducting at least 45 fraudulent transactions between April 2023 and October 2024.

According to court documents, Rostas used sleight-of-hand techniques to shortchange cashiers by hundreds or thousands of dollars during each transaction. After having merchandise scanned or an electronic money transfer initiated, he would count out enough cash for the purchase but then surreptitiously remove bills before handing it over. He also frequently returned merchandise for full refunds after the fraud.

Rostas’s activities spanned at least 18 states and resulted in losses of at least $130,000 for Walmart. He is scheduled for sentencing on December 11 and faces up to 20 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, or both. Restitution will be ordered and deportation is likely.

The case was investigated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations, the Missouri State Highway Patrol, and the Arnold Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Justin Ladendorf is prosecuting.
