A St. Louis man was sentenced on Mar. 10 to 13 and a half years in prison for carjacking a woman in the city in early 2024, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

The sentencing of Deionte Grice, age 31, comes after he pleaded guilty in October to one count of carjacking and one count of brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence. The case highlights ongoing concerns about violent crime and gun offenses in St. Louis.

According to court records, Grice approached a woman on Jan. 5, 2024, after she parked her Kia Optima on Devonshire Avenue. He pointed a gun at her and demanded her belongings before taking her car, phone, and purse. Grice later crashed the vehicle into a curb near Forest Park and abandoned it before boarding a MetroBus.

Police officers stopped the bus and found Grice with the stolen purse as well as two handguns. In addition to his new convictions, Grice admitted violating supervised release from an earlier federal firearms conviction in 2020.

The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department investigated the incident, while Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew Martin prosecuted the case.

Grice’s sentence reflects both his actions during the carjacking and his prior criminal history involving firearms.
